Toyota 4Runner: System Description

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. POWER WINDOW CONTROL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

(a) The power window control system controls the power window operation using the power window regulator motors. The main controls of this system are the multiplex network master switch assembly, which is mounted on the driver side door, the power window regulator switch assembly (for front passenger side), which is mounted on the front passenger side door, and the rear power window regulator switches, which are mounted on the rear doors. Operating a window switch results in electrical power being transmitted to the corresponding power window regulator motor. Also, the back door power window can be opened and closed using the back door power window regulator switch.

2. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

The power window control system consists of the following components:

Component

Outline

Multiplex network master switch assembly

  • Controls power window operation for all windows (except back door power window).

Power window regulator switch assembly

  • Located on the front passenger side door and rear doors.
  • Each power window regulator switch controls power window operations for its respective window.

Back door power window regulator switch assembly

Controls power window operation for the back door window.

Power window regulator motor assembly

  • Receives power window regulator switch signals and activates the motor to change the window position.
  • Uses the Hall IC in the regulator motor to detect the window position and jamming.

Multiplex network door ECU (Back door P/W)

Receives back door power window regulator switch signals and sends them to the back power window regulator motor.

Back door power window regulator motor assembly

  • Receives multiplex network door ECU signals and activates the motor to change the window position.
  • Uses the Hall IC in the regulator motor to detect the window position and jamming.

3. SYSTEM FUNCTION

The power window control system has the following functions:

Function

Outline

Manual up/down function

Function that raises a window while a power window regulator switch is pulled halfway up, and lowers the window while a power window regulator switch is pushed halfway down (the window stops as soon as the power window regulator switch is released).

Auto up/down function (All auto)

Function that enables a window to be fully opened or closed by one full push or pull of the power window regulator switch.

Remote up/down function

Function that allows the multiplex network master switch to control the front passenger side power window and rear power windows.

Window lock function

  • Function that disables power window regulator switch operation when the window lock switch is pressed.
  • The power window regulator switch can be operated when the window lock switch is pressed again.

Jam protection function

  • Function that automatically stops a power window and moves it downward if an object is jammed in the power window.
  • The jam protection function works for the auto up and manual up operations.

Catch protection function

Function that automatically stops the power window if something gets caught between the door and door glass during auto down or manual down operation.

Key-off operation function

Function that makes it possible to operate all power windows for approximately 43 sec. after the ignition switch is turned off when a front door has not been opened.

HINT:

  • If the window lock switch is off, the windows can be operated using any of the power window regulator switch assemblies.
  • If the driver side door or front passenger side door is opened during automatic window operation while the key-off operation function is on, the window will stop operating.

Back Door Power Window Function

  • Pressing the unlock switch on the back door control switch for approximately 0.7 second or more causes the back door window to open while sounding wireless buzzer.
  • Pressing the lock switch on the back door control switch for approximately 0.7 second or more causes the back door window to close while sounding wireless buzzer.

Key-linked open and close*

  • When the key is not inside the vehicle and the driver side door is locked, turning and maintaining the driver side door key cylinder in the lock position for 1.5 seconds or more causes the main body ECU to activate the power window regulator motors to close all the power windows while the key is turned.
  • Similarly, when the driver side door is unlocked, turning and maintaining the driver side door key cylinder in the unlock position for 1.5 seconds or more will cause all power windows to open.
  • When the key is not inside the vehicle the back door is locked, and the key inserted into the back door key cylinder is turned and maintained in the lock position for 1.5 seconds or more, the multiplex door ECU (back door P/W) activate the back power window regulator motor assembly to close the back power windows while the key is turned.

Wireless transmitter-linked open*

  • When the certification ECU receives an unlock signal from the electrical key transmitter for 3 seconds or more, the main body ECU (multiplex network body ECU) sends an operation request, signal to the power window ECU in each power window regulator motor assembly. As a result the power window regulator motors open all power windows (except back door power window).

Diagnosis

  • Function where the ECU in the door window regulator detects malfunctions in the power window system and makes a diagnosis.
  • The power window switch light blinks to inform the driver of the malfunction.

Fail-safe

If the pulse sensor(s) (Hall IC(s)) in the door window regulator motor malfunctions, the power window auto up/down function is disabled.

  • *: Default setting is OFF.
